Around Lago Atitlan

The day of the last post, I took off to travel around the lake. Martin put me on the boat to San Marcos, a bit of a hippy town. It turned out to be a small of a paradiso on its own, every hostel/hotel. All had nice gardens and small bungalows to sleep. The first thing I did was take a quick swim in the warm lake waters.

I wanted to stay but schedule kept me going to San Pedro. I walked all the way, decpit all the warning I got. "Mui peligroso", very dangerous to walk on those road. I thought about it and did it anyway. It was like a walk in the park, I met some other tourist doing the same thing. Fear is a powerfull weapon. The ones warning me, all wanted money for a "guided" walk to San Pedro.

A roommate told me to check out this awesome hostel Jarachik in San Pedro, so I did, and good it was. It was run by a Dutchman from Deurne. The first night I slept in a private room, but that was double as expensive as a dorm room: 4 euro instead of 2!!! After a dinner of 3 euro ofcourse. Boy, who is going to cook for himself, if breakfest/dinner (believe me, the best you ever had) is going to cost you 3 euro? Stuffed chicken/giant burritos/french fries, they all taste good.

Sunday I walked my way up the vulcane San Pedro, all alon. I did pay for a guide, but he was so slow, he returned and I got going up all by myself. Many tourist I passed all asked me the same question: "all alone?". If you are ever here, don't pay for a guide (100 Q/10 euro), but ask for the path and go up by yourself. It's a waste of money if you pay.

The hike took me 3 hours and 15, an hour of viewing, 1 hour and 15 minutes back down. Tired back down, but it is worth it. Monday I got back to Martins place, but he told me my trip to Tikal is delayed by a week. Probably will be going to Antigua, on my way to Guatemala City. I have no plans.

Check out the new pictures.

Hey Guido,

I hope you read this, but I have a small tip for you. I didn't thought I would say this, Martin told me the same tip before I left home and didn't took his advice. I wish I did. The tip:

Do not bring big walking shoes/boots with you...

Just bring your normal walking shoes/sneakers with you, and buy some sandels/(slippers) in Brazil very cheap. That is how everybody does it, that is how I have should done it, that is how you should do it.

I have carried to boots all over the place now, and only used them one (1) time! When I walked up to San Pedro. To tell you the truth, I could have walked up there with my normal shoes, everybody does that, and it is not worth a long shot, bringing such heavy big boots to brazil, and carrying them around.

Don't do it, that's my advice. If you already bought some, leave them at home!

Mooie foto's Olaf. Vooral die op de Motor. Zie ik een vakantiebaard? Dat is een goed teken. Wees voorzichtig.
