Kanchanaburi

In the second world war the British, Australians and Dutch POW (Prisoners of War) where forced by the invading Japanese to build the infamous Death Railway. The track starting in Bangkok, going through Kanchanaburi, a small city 4 hours west of Bangkok, leaded all the way into Myanmar. The reason for that was to support the Japanese troops in Myanmar, which were very difficult to supply with goods.

The British, originally occupying the area, planned to build this railway, but were held back a great deal by the difficult terrain. 6 years it would take, so no real attempts were made. The Japanese, with the use of about 180 .000 Asian laborers and 60.000 Allied POWs, build the track in 16 months. The harsh conditions resulted in the death of 16.000 Allied and 90.000 Asian laborers.

The bridge over the river Kwai, hellfire pass and memorials are super interesting sights to visit. It reminds of the cruel war and what people are capable of under certain forces.
